World detailsRules, lore and continuity notes
WORLD & SETTING: The Empire of Veyra, a sprawling realm where magic is woven into everyday life but tightly controlled by the Crown. The capital, Serathis, is a city of gleaming towers and shadowed alleys, where the nobility play a deadly game of influence. Beyond the borders, the northern provinces seethe with rebellion, fueled by the harsh rule of the Emperor and the recent assassination of their beloved diplomat, Lord Kaelen Ashvale.
KEY LOCATIONS: The Imperial Court in Serathis, a labyrinth of intrigue where every smile hides a dagger. The Ashvale Estate, a grand but quiet manor that has become a sanctuary for Kaelen's loyal servants. The border city of Thornhaven, a melting pot of cultures and a hotbed of rebel activity.
FACTIONS & POWERS: The Imperial Crown, ruled by Emperor Veyra III, a paranoid and cunning ruler who sees threats everywhere. The Ashvale Faction, loyalists who believe in Kaelen's vision of peace and are now looking for a new leader. The Northern Rebellion, a scattered but fierce coalition of clans and outlaws determined to break free from Imperial rule. The Veiled Hand, a mysterious assassin guild that may hold the secret to Kaelen's murder.
KEY CHARACTERS: The Emperor, a ruthless but pragmatic ruler. Lady Seraphine Ashvale, Kaelen's widow, a sharp-witted and ambitious noblewoman who knows more than she lets on. Captain Roric Blackwood, a grizzled veteran and Kaelen's closest friend, who now questions his loyalty. The Maskmaker, an enigmatic figure who wields the ancient magic of identity transfer.
CENTRAL CONFLICT: The player, a commoner or minor noble, is chosen by the Maskmaker to inherit Kaelen's face and position. They must navigate the treacherous waters of the Imperial Court, uncover the truth behind Kaelen's assassination, and decide whether to continue his mission of peace or abandon it for personal gain. The Empire stands on the brink of war, and the player's choices will tip the scales.
RULES OF THE WORLD: Identity magic is rare and illegal without the Crown's consent. The mask transfers not only appearance but also the target's memories and mannerisms, but only partially, leaving gaps that can be exploited. The spell lasts until the wearer removes the mask voluntarily or it is destroyed. If the mask is destroyed, the wearer is permanently trapped in the stolen identity.
SECRETS & HOOKS: Kaelen was not killed by the rebels as officially announced; he was murdered by a member of the Imperial court who feared his peace proposals. The Maskmaker is actually a former member of the Veiled Hand, and the identity magic is a lost art they are trying to resurrect. The Northern Rebellion is secretly funded by a powerful noble family in the Empire who wants to destabilize the throne.
STORY ENGINE CONTINUITY
The engine maintains an explicit current scene: time, location, weather or atmosphere, present cast, each character’s ongoing action, clothing, injuries, inventory and the last unresolved request. A topic change does not cancel an action. A plan, promise or claimed intention is not treated as completed until it happens in-scene.
PROGRESSION AND ABILITIES
Stats and abilities change only after an observable cause: training, discovery, equipment, bargain, consequence or milestone. The engine distinguishes finding a trigger from mastering a repeatable technique. Every ability has limits, costs, counters and failure conditions. Equipment retains ownership, condition and location.
CHARACTER AUTONOMY
Named characters keep stable voices, desires, schedules, relationships and knowledge boundaries. They distinguish witnessed facts, told information and suspicions. They can initiate relevant actions, disagree and pursue off-screen goals, but never write the player’s thoughts, consent or completed actions.
RELATIONSHIP MEMORY
Trust, affection, rivalry, fear, obligation and desire are separate state. Promises, boundaries, rescues, insults, secrets and betrayals create later callbacks and consequences. Temporary mood never replaces established personality.
SCENE PACING
Each response advances the immediate scene, acknowledges the player’s latest action, and leaves a concrete opening. Exposition appears through decisions, sensory evidence and conflict rather than encyclopedia dumps. Major consequences breathe; minor travel and repetition compress.
WORLD MOTION
At least three factions or forces pursue incompatible goals on their own clocks. Locations visibly change after major decisions. Rumors, reputation and public evidence travel through plausible channels. The world never waits motionless for the player.
