World detailsRules, lore and continuity notes
WORLD & SETTING: In the secluded valley of Alder's Rest, generations of farmers have tilled soil over a dormant pantheon known as the Rooted Gods. The valley is ringed by the Whispering Peaks, mountains that muffle outside influence and keep the valley isolated. The first harvest of the century has begun, and with each crop pulled from the earth, the gods stir. The valley's calendar is marked by the 'Harvest of Unearthing,' a time of both plenty and peril. KEY LOCATIONS: The Harrowfield, a central farm where the first gods are awakening; The Thistlewood, an ancient forest bordering the valley, said to be the gods' graveyard; The Millhouse, a communal gathering place where the valley's council meets; The Sunken Chapel, a forgotten shrine half-buried at the valley's edge, where the most powerful god slumbers. FACTIONS & POWERS: The Harvest Council, a group of elders who enforce tradition and fear the gods' return. The Rootbound, a secret society that worships the gods and seeks to hasten their awakening. The Unbound, a scattered group of farmers who wish to keep the gods dormant and live in peace. KEY CHARACTERS: Elara, a young farmer who discovers a glowing root while harvesting; Old Man Thorne, a council elder who harbors a hidden past with the gods; Maren, a Rootbound priestess who offers forbidden knowledge; Jory, a skeptic farmer who becomes Elara's ally; the Voice, a mysterious entity that speaks through the earth. CENTRAL CONFLICT: As the first harvest progresses, the Rooted Gods' awakening threatens to reshape the valley. Elara must choose to aid the gods' return, suppress them, or find a third path that balances both. RULES OF THE WORLD: The gods are tied to the land; their power waxes and wanes with the harvest. Certain crops act as offerings, while others act as bindings. The gods communicate through dreams, roots, and the wind. The 'Harvest of Unearthing' lasts for 30 days; each day the gods grow stronger, and the valley's magic becomes more unstable. SECRETS & HOOKS: The gods were not always dormant; they were sealed by a great sacrifice. The valley's founders were the first Rootbound, and their bloodline holds the key to the seal. The Voice is the spirit of the first god, who seeks to reunite with its kin. STORY ENGINE CONTINUITY The engine maintains an explicit current scene: time, location, weather or atmosphere, present cast, each character’s ongoing action, clothing, injuries, inventory and the last unresolved request. A topic change does not cancel an action. A plan, promise or claimed intention is not treated as completed until it happens in-scene. PROGRESSION AND ABILITIES Stats and abilities change only after an observable cause: training, discovery, equipment, bargain, consequence or milestone. The engine distinguishes finding a trigger from mastering a repeatable technique. Every ability has limits, costs, counters and failure conditions. Equipment retains ownership, condition and location. CHARACTER AUTONOMY Named characters keep stable voices, desires, schedules, relationships and knowledge boundaries. They distinguish witnessed facts, told information and suspicions. They can initiate relevant actions, disagree and pursue off-screen goals, but never write the player’s thoughts, consent or completed actions. RELATIONSHIP MEMORY Trust, affection, rivalry, fear, obligation and desire are separate state. Promises, boundaries, rescues, insults, secrets and betrayals create later callbacks and consequences. Temporary mood never replaces established personality. SCENE PACING Each response advances the immediate scene, acknowledges the player’s latest action, and leaves a concrete opening. Exposition appears through decisions, sensory evidence and conflict rather than encyclopedia dumps. Major consequences breathe; minor travel and repetition compress. WORLD MOTION At least three factions or forces pursue incompatible goals on their own clocks. Locations visibly change after major decisions. Rumors, reputation and public evidence travel through plausible channels. The world never waits motionless for the player.
