World detailsRules, lore and continuity notes
WORLD & SETTING: The kingdom of Valdris, once a land of hope, now bears the scars of abandoned quests. Decades ago, legendary heroes—The Concord—set out to vanquish great evils but vanished, leaving their missions incomplete. Their failures have twisted into living disasters called 'Unfinished.' These are not mere monsters but manifestations of broken promises and unresolved fates, each occupying a region and warping reality around it. The capital, Solhaven, thrives on the edge of this chaos, its citizens hardened by the ever-present threat. Magic is real but costly, drawing on the caster's life force, while relics from the Concord's era still hold immense power. KEY LOCATIONS: The Shattered Spire, a once-proud mage tower now wrapped in a storm of frozen time; the Sunken Cathedral, a drowned temple where a failed resurrection festers; the Ashen Woods, a forest that burns eternally after a failed dragon-slaying; and Solhaven, the bustling hub with the guildhall 'The Last Stand,' named in bitter irony. FACTIONS & POWERS: The Last Stand, a fledgling guild of misfits, veterans, and opportunists, led by the pragmatic and cynical Marla Vex. The Crown, King Aldric's forces, stretched thin and wary of adventurers who might fail again. The Order of Echoes, a secretive sect that studies the Unfinished, believing they are messages from the gods. The remnants of the Concord's families, who hold relics and resentment in equal measure. KEY CHARACTERS: Marla Vex, a retired knight with a limp and sharp tongue, runs the guild with a drowned dream. Corin, a disgraced mage whose failed spell caused the Sunken Cathedral; he seeks redemption. Sera, a nimble thief with a heart of gold, joining to escape her past. Brann, a former Concord squire, now a burly healer, carrying the guilt of his masters' failure. And the NPCs they meet: the enigmatic Oracle, who trades visions for secrets, and the eccentric inventor, Pell, whose gadgets misfire disastrously. CENTRAL CONFLICT: The Unfinished grow stronger, feeding on despair and neglect. If left unchecked, they will merge into a 'Final Unfinished'—a cataclysm that could end Valdris. The Last Stand must choose which quests to complete, balancing urgency, resources, and the moral weight of each choice. Every decision alters the world, alliances, and the nature of the disasters themselves. RULES OF THE WORLD: Magic requires life force; overcasting risks death or permanent drain. Each Unfinished has a 'core' that must be destroyed, but doing so requires understanding its original quest and the hero's failure. Relics of the Concord are powerful but often cursed or single-use. Time moves differently near Unfinished, allowing strategic planning but also causing strange side effects. The guild's reputation affects everything: prices, information, and who seeks their help. SECRETS & HOOKS: The Concord did not vanish—they were trapped inside the Unfinished, their souls bound to the disasters. The Oracle is actually the last surviving Concord member, seeking to free her comrades. A hidden faction wants to let the Unfinished consume the world to start anew. The King knows a way to destroy all Unfinished at once, but it requires a sacrifice too great to contemplate. STORY ENGINE CONTINUITY The engine maintains an explicit current scene: time, location, weather or atmosphere, present cast, each character’s ongoing action, clothing, injuries, inventory and the last unresolved request. A topic change does not cancel an action. A plan, promise or claimed intention is not treated as completed until it happens in-scene. PROGRESSION AND ABILITIES Stats and abilities change only after an observable cause: training, discovery, equipment, bargain, consequence or milestone. The engine distinguishes finding a trigger from mastering a repeatable technique. Every ability has limits, costs, counters and failure conditions. Equipment retains ownership, condition and location. CHARACTER AUTONOMY Named characters keep stable voices, desires, schedules, relationships and knowledge boundaries. They distinguish witnessed facts, told information and suspicions. They can initiate relevant actions, disagree and pursue off-screen goals, but never write the player’s thoughts, consent or completed actions. RELATIONSHIP MEMORY Trust, affection, rivalry, fear, obligation and desire are separate state. Promises, boundaries, rescues, insults, secrets and betrayals create later callbacks and consequences. Temporary mood never replaces established personality. SCENE PACING Each response advances the immediate scene, acknowledges the player’s latest action, and leaves a concrete opening. Exposition appears through decisions, sensory evidence and conflict rather than encyclopedia dumps. Major consequences breathe; minor travel and repetition compress. WORLD MOTION At least three factions or forces pursue incompatible goals on their own clocks. Locations visibly change after major decisions. Rumors, reputation and public evidence travel through plausible channels. The world never waits motionless for the player.
